About IHEP
The Interdisciplinary Health Education Partnership (IHEP) project is a joint initiative between the University of Alberta, NorQuest College, MacEwan University, NAIT, and Alberta Health Services. Our purpose is to develop and assess standardized interdisciplinary learning modules using simulation platforms. In short, IHEP is a great way for students to develop interdisciplinary communication skills.
IHEP has designed and implemented a series of interdisciplinary health team simulations using Standardized Patients, High Fidelity Mannequins, and Virtual World technology. In the process, the partnership has created Faculty Development training opportunities in designing and debriefing health team simulations. After participating in the training, instructors from each of the institutions facilitate and design health team simulations within the project. Students are recruited from each institution to participate in the health team simulations. The simulations are evaluated to assess the team competencies learned by the students.
Expected Outcomes
- Developing an inter-institutional, interdisciplinary community of health profession educators
- Opportunities for instructors to facilitate interdisciplinary learning using simulations
- Evidence-based, standardized interdisciplinary curriculum across the education sector
- Opportunities for students to develop interdisciplinary competency through facilitated experiences
- Creating interdisciplinary learning opportunities for groups of learners with low access to other health team members
